Fairtrade Fortnight '10

On Saturday 27 February 2010, Uphall Fairtrade Group celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight by hosting an event at the Open Door, Uphall.

Highlights of the event were:

Fairtrade chocolate on every table!
Fairtrade recipe booklets distributed
Showing of Fairtrade 2010 DVD at selected intervals throughout the event
Fairtrade tea, coffee and home baking all available at the cafe

The event was enjoyed by all and further promotes Fairtrade in the village.

 
Yakanaka Foundation

Our Fairtrade Event – ‘Make it Happen, Choose Fairtrade’ which was held on Saturday 7th March 2009 enabled us to make a donation of £200 to the Yakanaka Foundation (www.yakanaka.com).  The Yakanaka Foundation runs projects in Zimbabwe.  The donation enabled the organisation to buy 600kg of CSB fortified porridge which is fed to the malnurished children and orphans in the area - and kept the feeding programme going for another 50 days.

Uphall Fairtrade Steering Group held an Uphall Fairtrade Event – ‘Make it Happen, Choose Fairtrade’ in the Community Centre on Saturday 7th March.

Some of the events on the day were – a children’s corner, treasure hunt, display of winning posters of art competitions in which local primary schools participated, Fairtrade stall, home baking using Fairtrade ingredients, refreshments, snack stall, raffle, ‘Go Bananas’and Fairtrade awareness displays.

After the event, we were able to make a donation of £200 to the Yakanaka Foundation (www.yakanaka.com) which runs projects in Zimbabwe. This money enabled the organisation to buy 600kg of CSB fortified porridge which is fed to the malnurished children and orphans in the area. This will keep the feeding programme going for another 50 days.

 
Fairtrade village status awarded

At the Fairtrade Event which was held on Saturday 10th March in Uphall Community Centre at 2.00pm, Uphall was officially declared a Fairtrade Village, the first village in West Lothian. The certificate was presented by Veronica Pasteur, Campaign Officer at Fairtrade Foundation, London.  Jim Devine MP and Bristow Muldoon MSP attended the event.

Bristow Muldoon MSP gave a talk about how the Scottish Parliament supports Fairtrade and is working towards Scotland becoming a Fairtrade nation. West Lothian Youth Theatre performed a Fairtrade Drama which highlighted problems that workers face in developing countries. Veronica Pasteur gave a presentation about the aims of Fairtrade and how it benefits farmers and their families. Fairtrade products (food and craft goods ) were on sale at the Fairtrade stalls. A buffet, with all the Fairtrade foods, wine and juice donated by Scotmid, finished off the afternoon.

Uphall South Parish Church has a Traidcraft Stall at its Family Service on the 4th Sunday of every month.

The Open Door, Uphall hosted our Fairtrade Fortnight event on Saturday 27 February 2010.

Members of Uphall Fairtrade Group ran a Fairtrade stall at Uphall Gala Day in June 2009.
